You can make a lot of money writing romance – a lot.

I. Romance Writing Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

To be blunt, removing dumb, blind luck from the equation, most romance writers are not going to make a crap load of money writing just one book. So if you write one and it doesn’t sell, don’t give up and think, “There’s no money to be made writing romance.”

It’s not true. There is. And it can be a lot. But ...

Money is made in romance writing – in fact, in self-publishing in general – by volume. I didn’t start earning over $2,000 per month until I’d written 15 novellas. So keep writing.

II. Most of Your Sales Will Come from a Few Books

If you could pinpoint which few, you wouldn’t have to write so many. But, you just never know what’s going to “pop” with readers. When one does, it’ll drag sales of others along with it.

This is the thing I love the most about publishing romance. Romance readers are prolific readers and if they like your work, they’ll keep buying from you. This makes it relatively easy to build an audience as a romance author.

One thing you should know is that no matter how many books you publish, most of your sales will likely come from just a few of your titles. I see that in my non-fiction book publishing too. It just seems to be a publishing truism.

One of the biggest fears many aspiring romance writers have is that they won’t be good enough. This is a normal fear. But writing romance is a skill that can be learned. So don’t let this fear stop you; push through it. I guarantee you won’t regret it.
